Soochow University, formerly known as Soochow University, was founded in 1900 and was the first university in China to be organized under the modern university discipline system, the first to provide specialized education in law (Anglo-American law), the first to provide postgraduate education and to award master's degrees, and the first university in China to set up a school newspaper. 1952 was the year of faculty restructuring, when the College of Liberal Arts and Science of Soochow University, the School of Culture and Education of Southern Jiangsu Province, and the Department of Mathematics and Science of Jiangnan University were merged to form the Southern Jiangsu Teachers College, which was renamed Jiangsu Teachers College in 1982. In 1952, the faculties were reorganized, and the College of Arts and Sciences of Soochow University, the College of Culture and Education of Southern Jiangsu Province, and the Department of Mathematics and Science of Jiangnan University were merged to form the Southern Jiangsu Teachers' College, which was renamed Jiangsu Teachers' College in the same year. Later, Suzhou Sericulture College (1995), Suzhou Silk College (1997) and Suzhou Medical College (2000) were incorporated into Soochow University.
